Carmel HS basketball fever celebrated by Carmel Clay Historical Society
Did You Know...?
The first basketball game in Hamilton County was played in October of 1903. Arcadia, Atlanta, Boxley, Carmel, Cicero and Sheridan high schools all fielded teams this first season. In a hotly contested tournament, Atlanta beat Sheridan 2-0 for the first Hamilton County title in the sport.
Join the Carmel Clay Historical Society as they explore the history of high school basketball in Carmel and Hamilton County. The first event will honor Carmel's state champion basketball team from 40 years ago! A special event to honor the 1977 IHSAA State Championship team has been set for March 21 at Flix Brewhouse. Former players will be on hand to share memories of the tournament as fans watch an edited video of one of the most exciting championship games and the community pep session that followed. The event begins at 7 p.m. at Flix and tickets can be purchased through Eventbrite. Please contact CCHS at 317-979-4236 for more information.
ALSO ... the Monon Depot Museum will open March 25 with the exhibit A History of Champions: CHS Excellence in Basketball. The exhibit will celebrate girls and boys basketball from 1903 to the present. If you have any CHS basketball memorabilia you would like to loan for the exhibit, please email archives@carmelclayhistory.org.
